Majority of us have had the thought , wouldn’t it be amazing if I won the lottery then I could jack in my job and do what I really want to do. Travel the world, open up a business, work for charity , give back to society or simply hang out with your friends. All of this is restricted to what if scenarios , half of us don’t even buy a lottery ticket so have zero chance in making this a reality yet we still day dream about the possibility.
However what if was possible , what if someone waved a magic wand and said tomorrow you could leave the “rat race” , you could live each day the way you want to live it , with enjoyment , joy and spend time with loved ones. You would jump at the chance right?
What I didn’t mention is that it may come at a small cost, ie maybe you may have to downsize a little and maybe you may miss out on eating on in fancy restaurants and you may not be able to buy the best designer wear but you can still can feed yourself and your family, you have a roof over your head, you have extra time to spend with your family. What would you choose?
Choose?? I can hear the shouts already – we have no choice, we have to work to keep a roof over our heads, to feed our families etc……this is all true but if you were to sit down and truly work out the bare inessential’s you need to survive you will probably save 70% of your salary. If you remember you managed to survive on a minuscule amount when you were a student but as you entered the job market, you got used to the higher income. You changed your tastes and preferences to suit your new status. You stopped eating in Pizza Hut and upgrade to Pizza express. You stopped shopping in cheap shops for slightly more affluent ones. Then you got promoted at work, guess what happened to your needs , they expanded, what made you happy , the value you place on money had changed.
The joy you got from finding a pound at the back of the sofa doesn’t hold the same excitement. You shifted what you needed to have a comfortable life, you grew your list, from just having basic food and shelter to now having a flash car, the latest gadget and so on. Do you remember a time without mobiles, we managed to survive without them right but now we know that life is like with them , if you were to give it up now it would be like chopping your right arm off.
You had a bite of the apple, you want more and more………what you don’t realise is that with bigger wants comes bigger sacrifices. You couldn’t possibly go back to leaving a simple life where you just had a roof over your head and food on the table. You have become a slave to things that you are acquiring. You forget what is important in life, you start working all hours that god sends in order to climb the corporate ladder in order to earn a bigger bonus. At what cost? You are too tired to spend time with your kids, with your friends ? With your partner? There’s always time to do that another day isn’t there? They will understand, They will understand that you are a big shot in some company. You then start neglecting your health , eat what you can fit to your busy schedule, stress becomes part of your life. Then one day the impact of this busy lifestyle catches up with you , you become ill, who’s there to look after you? Are they the people at work that you have spent most of your days with? No they are the people you were too busy to see , to busy to spend time with , they are the people that understood you. What happens if you are then told you have not long to live, will you look back and think oh my god, I am so glad I spend so much time at the office amassing all of this fortune as I am going to take it all with me. I think you might consider that you wish that you had spent more time with loved ones , more time with people that care about you , more time in the simple pleasures of life. This life was given you to experience things , don’t waste it by sitting in a box five days a week. don’t waste it by not experiencing the true joy of existence.
I want to shout at the world, how come you have bought into this , how come you don’t realise it s all a game. The message has been long lost. It’s meant to be that you have a comfortable life and you help in the growth in humanity , It’s never said anywhere that you get caught up in greed and materialism. Imagine that you spent most of your life working for some green notes, these notes buy you food , a holiday , a car, a house but one thing it does not buy you is freedom. The cost of the green bill is freedom. Why have we so willingly sacrificed ourselves to this notion, why are able to give up on who we are , our principles for the pursuit of this fleeting thing. You are finally at your resting –place , do you think how much money you made will matter, how much of a big shot you were matters, people will forget those things very quickly. What is your legacy? What endures is actions, what endures is what you have done with your life?. How many people lives have you impacted? How people have you loved? How many peoples lives have you enriched? What difference have you made?
Money and making a difference does not have to be mutually exclusive, both are possible, however the mistake most people make is to make money their end goal. They forget their passion in life , they give up their dreams for the elusive green bill!
