“What on earth are you doing with that cat” A phrase I would undoubtedly here almost every day from my parents, when aged 8, Dad bought home a scrawny black semi-ferral cat to ‘keep me company’. As an only child with extremely busy parents, I would occupy myself by reading, anything on the subject of animals. I’d hide myself away in my bedroom and have my nose under a mountain of non-fiction books.
One day Dad who worked as a Builder at a city steel works, took on the task of feeding ‘the foundry cats’ from his colleague who was on holiday. All were stray cats that had been carelessly cast aside into this harsh, industrial landscape from homes that they thought would be forever.
A black cat, whom I named Timmy had an impact on my Dad, I’ll Explain:- Timmy was semi-ferral and although my Dad tried to coax him to eat his appetite was poor. After hiring a trapping cage Dad rescued Timmy and brought him home. I was overjoyed to have a companion to share silly moments and secrets with. We bonded almost straight away but after a week we had to take Timmy to see the Vet. He was drastically losing weight and his appetite was increasingly poor. After numerous tests over a few days Timmy was diagnosed with a renal tumour. With an injection and a few pills we were told that the life Timmy had suffered had most likely contributed to his condition and we were advised that he should expect Timmy to live no more than 3 or 4 months. He requested to see him in 4 weeks time and decide what we should do. We took Timmy home. I was devastated. How could I allow this little man to suffer? What could I possibly do to help him? I couldn’t just leave him to die could I? Unaware of what I was doing, I placed Timmy in his basket and sat at the side of him, placed my hands upon him and felt immense, almost pulsating energy flow through me. Timmy started to ‘heat up and buzz’, it was akin to a light being turned on. Mum looked at me and thought it was such a strange thing to do but to me it was natural. I held out my hands lightly touching Timmy’s tiny body for around ten minutes until I saw him look almost serene and then I stroked him from head to tail.
Each day after school I’d rush in and demonstrate, now I know is healing, with Timmy. After about a week Timmy started to pick up, head raise his head in interest at food and start to eat, he even started to play with pieces of string that I’d pull across the floor for him, infact he started to behave like a normal, healthy feline! Four weeks passed and upon our visit to the Vet, which seemed to take forever as he prodded and poked my little friend the Vet had quite a perplexed look upon his face. ”I’d like to run a couple more tests”. With the result of the tests, a rather bemused Vet remarked that the renal tumor was the size of a pea, reduced in size from that of a small Satsuma. How could this be? The Vet said he hadn’t seen anything like this and he couldn’t offer us an explanation. Was it the injection at the initial consultation? Was it the 2 weeks worth of pain killers? Was it the energy that I had channeled. I honestly can’t say and neither could the Vet at that time. One thing I do know is that Timmy went on to live another 8 years and passed to Rainbow Bridge aged 16 peacefully in his sleep!
Prior to Timmy I remember Mum telling me, when aged 3 or 4 we would be on our way to Nursery school and she would be shooing cats away that would jump off gate posts to follow me. I remember a time when Mum was late to collect me from Primary school, I’d be about 9 at the time and waiting at the school gates when all the other children had gone home. Sat beside me was a Dalmation Dog, which I later found out was named Jason and a Border Collie called Dilly. It was as if the dogs knew Mum would be late and wanted to keep me safe. I was also always the one in my circle of friends to ask to take the neighbours’ dogs a walk rather than to play with dolls.
Upon leaving school I went straight to college to study Business & Finance and went to work within the Social Services but gained little from my post and the stress it created led me to have a mild stroke aged just 24. I was on holiday and it was my first wedding anniversary. I refused all medication even though the Doctor advised it would be likely that I would have another stroke within six months. I looked towards holistic methods of healing and recouperation and I also looked within myself. I did self healing everyday, meditation and visualization and I also had regular Reflexology & Reiki Healing treatments. When I had healed my body and felt stronger within I decided that the stroke was a turning point in my life and I embarked upon a change of career, much to the disappointment of some family members and I trained for the next eight years in various modalities of Complementary Therapy and in Psychological Counselling and I also trained for two years in Reiki Healing and became a Reiki Master Teacher, that was 14 years ago.
Throughout my twenties I found my diary divided between animal clients and human ones. I worked with a varying range of species from Horses, Dogs, Cats and Domestic animals to Llamas, Alpacas, Snakes and Marmoset Monkeys! My name was being passed on by word of mouth far and wide and I found myself traveling throughout the UK to see animals and their human companions. I was called anything from a Spiritual Master, Animal or Kitty Whisperer, Guru, Animal Visionary and even Mrs Doolittle but really I was just me working doing something that I loved.
As avid meditator, which I believe helped tremendously with my health set back, I found myself during meditation receiving great inspirational messages and guidance that I had to pass on great knowledge to others to define and validate the work that I was doing. I needed to express a language of what I was doing from the heart and help others tap into this great energy within themselves. In 1998 I received, what can only be called ‘an awakening’ and I knew that this was the path on which I had to walk.
I knew in my heart that many people wanted to share this deeper bond with their own animals and indeed the whole of the animal kingdom and to recognize
that they were not separate from these creatures. So for three years I worked devising a professional animal healing training course taken in two parts. Thus Animal Magic© Healing training courses were born. It took another couple of years to have their syllabus assessed for insurance and now my courses are fully insurable for students to become part of this magical world of animal healing. I always say to students, even if you don’t wish to work as a full time Animal Healer like myself or other students, the course will help you become a full time magical person!
On this journey I have had the pleasure to teach many differing individuals working in and out of the animal field from Horse Trainers, Veterinary Nurses, Post Graduate Students, Rescue Centre Volunteers and even a Lady of Eighty Two! I have even had people leaving their jobs within the legal profession and even the Metropolitan Police to become full time Animal Healers. I am currently in the process of setting up a healing practice solely for animals. The first of it’s kind in East Anglia.
I believe that anyone can achieve great things in animal healing. You need not possess a ‘gift’ we ALL have the gift if we just tap into a part of ourselves that has lain dormant for so long. Healing is a re-awakening of mind, it is learning to trust our own sprit and intuition. It is also in believing that great things are possible. I have seen some near miracles since I first helped heal Timmy thirty years ago.
The way I work as a professional is first and foremost to adhere strictly to the code of conduct and ethics in working with animals. I also work within the law of The Veterinary Protection Act including following stringent health and safety guidelines.
Upon an initial visit I go through a detailed consultation form with the animal’s guardian which includes medical history, dates of vet visits and details of the background of the animal etc. Once I have built a rapport with both owner and animal I will then connect to the animal by using many methods which can include dowsing, scanning and energy sensing. I then begin to tap into the energy field demonstrating a variety of hand positions. At any one time I could be using colour, light, sounds, mantras, mudras, healing symbols and intuitive or Reiki healing. When I have observed the body language of my patient I will end the treatment by grounding the energy within the auric field and go on to share information and intuitive insight with the animal’s guardian. It is important to know however that I do not diagnose any condition. This post healing information often opens up great surprise for the animal’s guardian as often the information I interpret is profound and often quite moving as animals communicate with me during their healing on many levels.
It is how the animal responds to the healing itself that will determine how many subsequent visits will be required. As a general guide normally four to five treatments for physical ailments but emotional or behavioural problems may take a few more sessions as often deeper level healing is needed to help deep routed thought patterns and negative or self destructive behaviour.
When I am working with horses it’s often like sharing the same soul. This may sound strange but equine energy is akin to the energy of the human being:- sensitive, intelligent and aware. Horses also respond to our body language and this can have a great impact on the behaviour. More often than not I have treated both owner and horse in the same session and indeed showed tips on how the guardian can affect the horses energy field in subtle but yet profound ways through their connection with their own horse.
It is important to ‘Listen’ to horses. Equine energy has so much to share with us and to teach us.
A quiet and relaxed mind must be the basis of deeper connection to our animal companions. Furthermore any notion that animals are lesser beings must be swept aside. Animals should be nurtured and cared for if we are to share our lives with them.
Animals are no way beneath us. They should not be persecuted in any way or used for monetary gain or indeed suffering untimely deaths, slaughtered for human consumption in the food chain. If you want to develop a deeper bond then please think a while on the above sentence, it deserves great thought and compassion. Having an animal show unconditional love for us can have a deep effect on our personalities. Cats don’t care how we look or if we have put on an extra few pounds. Dogs don’t care how untidy the kitchen drawers are and horses certainly don’t care what the latest ‘must have’ fashion accessory is. Their connection with us is deep and will be ever lasting. We can tap into this unconditional love and energy simply by placing our hands upon them, sensing their energy and becoming a part of it. Do you feel heat, or cold, or tingly? Are you picking up words, images, phrases or lines from songs as I often do. When making this initial contact it is important not to dismiss the feelings as we are working with intuition and not the left hand logical and scientific part of the brain. In healing we are working with what our ancestors used for hundreds of years – intention, awareness and belief to bring about positive change on many levels.
I am truly blessed to be learning and teaching something, that I believe, I was put on this earth for – to work as a full time Animal Healer. I support numerous animal charities and donate a percentage of course money to these charities. I have met with personal struggles but the blessings far out weight any adversity. I have met some wonderful souls both animal and human who have played a major part in my past, present and also my future, life. These thanks go to them. I am forever indebted to that scrawny black semi-ferral cat named Timmy for whom now I wouldn’t be living my dream. Thank you Timmy, you taught me so much, you shared your heart and soul with me, you are forever my guide.
