In this series I am including healers outside of
Spiritualism as well as those we know well, such as
Harry Edwards. Before continuing with the review of
Briege McKenna, I thought I'd offer a list of
Harry Edwards' books, since no healer should ignore
what he has to say after a lifetime's experience in
distant and spirit healing. There is a wealth of
knowledge for mediums and healers alike.
Books by Harry Edwards (in order of publication).
The Science of Spirit Healing. Rider. 1945.
Psychic Healing. Spiritualist Press. 1946.
A Guide to Spiritual Healing. Spiritualist Pr.1950.
Evidence for Spirt Healing: A Challenge to Medicine
and the Church. Spiritualist Press. 1953.
The Mediumship of Jack Webber. Rider and Co. 1953.
The Truth about Spiritual Healing. Spiritualist Press.
1956.
The Power of Spiritual Healing. Herbert Jenkins. 1963.
[The Power of Healing. 1967. Tandem :- probably the
same book as above].
The Healing Intelligence. Herbert Jenkins. 1965.
Thirty Years a Spiritual Healer. Herbert Jenkins.1968.
A Guide to the Understanding and Practice of Spiritual
Healing. Healer Publishing. 1974.
Life in Spirit: with A Guide for the Development of
Mediumship. Healer Publishing, Guildford. 1976.
Magic Minds, Miraculous Moments. [biographies of
famous psychics]. Healer Publishing. 1994.
Many of the above books are available new from the
Harry Edwards Sanctuary :-
plus healing tapes, a
current magazine and a biography of Harry Edwards. All
his books are available in used bookstores: search in
or similar sites. The
organization's website, at the Sanctuary still in
operation outside Guildford, U.K. is
Sister Briege Mckenna's book "Miracles Do Happen"
is available as a paperback, or as a talking book on 5
CDs, available on her website:-
This is also the site for the St. Clare Sisters
Retreat, in Orlando, Florida, to which she belongs.
Some of her time is now spent each year on healing
missions to many different countries of the world. I
am sure the spirit of St. Francis is not far away in
all her work.
Briege finally came to accept her gift of
healing, and made a commitment to spend two or three
hours a day in personal prayer.
The way she experienced the power of spirit, in
Catholic terms, was as follows, in her own words: "I
felt as though the Lord said to me, 'Well, don't you
know that you don't have to say anything to me? Just
be with me. Come into my presence. It's not what you
do for me, it's what I want to do for you....when you
come into my presence, you will experience the effects
of your time spent with me. People will see it in
your actions.' It was a great teaching to me,
knowing that I didn't always have to be 'saying'
things but all I had to do was be there with Jesus."
Now, a Spiritualist would say the same, with
reference to accepting the power of Spirit and Spirit
guides and doctors and helpers from the other side.
The healer and medium is merely the instrument for the
work.
The effectiveness of healing comes not just from
a belief in the power of Spirit, or that of the
Prophets and other spiritual agents we work with, but
through actually feeling it and being in communication
with Spirit. It is a "live," living
experience. It is not just faith, belief or hearsay.
A living experience with Jesus, Mahomet, the Buddha,
Krishna, our guide or helper, or a doctor in spirit,
it matters not whom we acknowedlge and experience as
our guide and authority, as long as we are working for
the Good of all, and not for our own personal gain,
fame and other selfish motives. That attitude will
attract the wrong type of help, with dire
consequences...just remember what forces inspired
Hitler, or Jim Jones.
So Sister Briege continues her good work, within
the Catholic orthodoxy. Her book is well worth a read
to understand the dedication of such a worker helping
so many heal from their pain and suffering, and to
compare with our own Spiritualist healers.
