Ethics.
When using the tarot for either fun or professionally, there are, I believe, certain ethics you must be mindful of. You must remember at all times that the information you receive through the cards is not yours to alter, nor to put your own judgements on. You, as the reader are there to interpret the cards meaning, and to convey that message to the client as it is presented. I also believe that you should not censor the information presented to you. Whether good news or bad, you should pass the information onto the sitter in a professional and considerate way. When reading for somebody you know, try not to interpret the cards by attaching the information given to something you already know about that person. This will, more than likely, lead to a false reading. Read the information as it comes to you.
The people who come to you for a reading, have not usually come to you to be told what they want to hear (Of course there are some who dp). You must tell them at the start of the reading that the cards can often be brutally honest with the information that is presented. If bad news does come through, Ask the sitter if they wish for you to ask deeper into the specific area and let it be their choice. If you have a good connection to your cards, they should always point to a way out of a bad situation. Even in the unusual circumstance of the cards predicting a death( I am a professional tarot reader with 15 years experience and have rarely had to predict a death, but it does occasionally happen.), you should be honest about the information. You are dealing with peoples lives, remember this.
Ritual and Ceremony
On the matter of ritual and ceremony, this is purely a matter of personal taste. It is the decision of the individual how much, if any ritual they wish to use when performing a reading. If you would like to ‘tune in’ before commencing, then please do so. If you would like to use candles or incense, this too is a matter of preference. I myself, feel no need for ritual when reading for others. Too much ritual can be a hinderance to your readings. I believe for example, that you should be able to whip out your cards at any given minute to perform a reading where ever you are and in any situation. If you require candles or incense to enable you to read, you will be limited as to where you perform your readings.
Try not to give too much reverence and ceremony to your cards. They are a tool for you to use, to gain insight into the lives of others. While it is true that you should take the cards seriously, too much reverence can prevent you from having fun with your cards. Try not to take yourself too seriously too. You are no different from the people who you are reading for. Reading tarot cards does not make you any more special than anyone else. You are an ordinary person who is able to do an extraordinary thing. Try to keep ego out of your readings. You will find that your cards respond much clearer if you make the reading about them, not you.
