Sponsorship is being sought for a centre of serenity - a quiet enclosure - at the Olympic site to balance the demanding energies of amplification, clapping and cheering, mobile phones, emergency alarms, and general hustle and bustle. A silent space would also provide a legacy for London which is a 24 hour, noisy and stressful capital city.
Several heads of schools within the 5 inner city boroughs have told me that the subject of silence would be excellent for a school project and to practise awareness in the class-room. Silence increases emotional intelligence, awareness of self and others, and aids psychological maturity.
Silence is necessary for relaxation and rest, however in our busy city, noise pollution is ignored and loudness is perceived as preferable to peace. Libraries no longer offer a quiet place and churches are closed for tranquil focus and contemplation.
There are some ‘experiential’ spaces in other countries which have been very successful such as the Rothko Chapel in Houston.
Our peaceful area could be used for the athletes to focus and prepare prior to competition, for visitors to enjoy the luxury of a new experience - and when the Games are over - for hire.
The building would be attended by volunteers during the Games. Partnerships would include youth clubs, sports clubs, interfaith groups without affiliation, secular and charitable societies and local people interested in linking spirituality with sport.
A purpose built pyramid would be a novelty design. Other suggestions have included 4 rooms, one room with a water fountain, one with a tiny Olympic flame, one with a laboratory made quartz crystal singing bowl, and one with a stained glass window. One room would be a possibility, within the planned building. The space would need to be sound proofed and air conditioned.
Alternatives at St James’, Piccadilly and local Buddhist orders have expressed an interest in the facility as have the Mayor of London and the Prince of Wales.
My personal vision is being placed before the London Development Agency and, if there is enough support for it, it will be considered.
